Eagles rally past Lake Placid in CVAC hockey showdown

PLATTSBURGH - Entering their Champlain Valley Athletic Conference hockey showdown against Beekmantown with their leading scorer out of the lineup, Lake Placid's Blue Bombers got off to quite a start Thursday night.
Just 26 seconds into the game, sophomore Ryan Damp stuffed a puck into the net to give Lake Placid an early 1-0 edge. But the host Eagles answered with the next four goals of the contest, and added two more in the final minute of the game to claim a 6-3 victory at the Ameri-Can North Sports Center.
Trailing 4-1 at the start of the third period, the Blue Bombers slashed their deficit to a single goal when they scored twice in less than two minutes, but the Eagles sealed the win on an empty-netter with 49 seconds left and tacked on one final tally after Lake Placid goalie Tucker Angelopoulos headed back onto the ice.

Six players scored single goals for the Eagles, who improved to 1-1 in the CVAC and 5-2 overall. Damp, Keegan Barney and Connor Preston each found the back of the net for the Blue Bombers, who are 1-1 in league games and 7-2 overall.
"Beekmantown has some real good forwards, and they really got on us at times, especially in the second period," Lake Placid head coach Keith Clark said. "We were tentative.
"I'll give that to our guys in the first period because we had to switch our lineup around and we were getting used to that," Clark added. "We were playing without our top scorer Eddie Kane, but we should have been squared away in the second period."
Damp, a sophomore, gave Lake Placid a quick start when he beat Beekmantown goalie Dustin Plumadore 26 seconds into the game. Carnright netted the equalizer on a power-play goal at the 3:34 mark, then Buksa put the Eagles ahead for good when he tallied with 4:54 left in the opening period.
Kyle Contanty and Nathan Foster scored the only goals of the middle period to give Beekmantown what appeared to be a commanding 4-1 lead entering the final period. In that stanza, they outshot the Blue Bombers 11-4 and held a 24-12 edge in shots at the time, but Lake Placid stormed back in the third period.
Barney, a senior captain, scored an unassisted goal 5:01 into the period to make it a 4-2 game, and freshman Connor Preston tallied at the 6:21 mark to pull Lake Placid within a goal. The Blue Bombers hopes for a comeback ended when Kyle Bisonette notched an empty net goal with 49 seconds remaining, and Austin Bradish rounded out the scoring with 26 seconds left to play.
"We dominated play during the first two periods. The shots on goal were indicative of that," said Beekmantown head coach Justin Frechette. "But I have to give Lake Placid a lot of credit. They dug themselves out a big hole, and I really like how our kids responded to that.
"Any time you get six goals, you have to be happy with the offensive end of things," Frechette added. It's early in the season, but this was a big win for us. The league is really tight this year."
"The third period was a real gut check for us," Clark said. "We were facing adversity. We really hadn't been in a situation like we were down a handful of goals. We played a great third period. We played like we should have, and I think that showed we could skate with anybody no matter who we had on the ice."
Beekmantown outshot Lake Placid 33-21. The Blue Bombers held a 9-8 edge in shots during the final period. Plumadore earned the win in goal with 18 saves while Angelopoulos recorded 27 stops for Lake Placid.
The Eagles play a non-league game next when they host Guilderland on Saturday. Lake Placid's next game will be a CVAC matchup Wednesday at rival Saranac Lake. That game is slated to start at 6:30 p.m.
