LAKE PLACID - Sixteen young, talented hockey players from the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference. That's the makeup of the Plattsburgh Roadrunners, a team that's heading to the 2013 Under-16 Boys National Championships.
The squad, which is led by head coach Keith Clark of Lake Placid and includes players from the Blue Bombers, Saranac Lake, Beekmantown, Plattsburgh and other area high schools, will compete in the U16 national championship tournament April 3-7 in Troy, Mich.
Members on the team from Lake Placid are Tucker Angelopolous, Kiefer Casler, Evan Damp, Connor Preston, Nzoni Thompson and Chris Williams. Chris Spicer will represent Saranac Lake.

The Roadrunners qualified to represent the New York District in Michigan after finishing runner-up at the state tournament earlier this month in Amherst, where they posted a 2-2-1 record that included a heartbreaking 5-4 loss in double overtime to Cheektowaga in the championship game.
Plattsburgh's exciting run to the state championship final began with two games on Friday, March 15.
The Roadrunners opened with a fantastic finish in their first game, erasing a two-goal deficit late in the third period to earn a 2-2 tie with Nassau. Trailing 2-0, Michael Stetz netted Plattsburgh's first goal with just under three minutes left in the third to make it a 2-1 score. The Roadrunners were then awarded a penalty shot with four-tenths-of-a-second remaining when a Nassau defender dislodged his team's net under pressure from the Roadrunners. With a chance to tie the game, Beekmantown's Nate Foster buried the penalty shot to give the Roadrunners the tie.
In their next game, the Roadrunners suffered a 3-2 loss to Clarence, the top-seeded squad in the West region. On Saturday, the Roadrunners topped the Long Island Rebels 7-1 to reach Sunday's semifinal round, where they blanked the Long Island 4-0.
In the championship game, the Roadrunners battled back from 3-1 and 4-2 deficits, ultimately tying the contest at 4-4 with their goalie pulled to force overtime. Cheektowaga, however, netted the game-winner in the second overtime period.
"We put this team together to try and supplement the high school schedule and give these players some more quality games," Clark said. "We had plenty of quality players but really never anticipated being so close in the state championships.
"What a great honor to be able to represent the New York District in the national tournament," Clark added. "We will go with the attitude of enjoying the experience and competing hard."

The Blue Bomber Flow

I hope everybody enjoyed the banquet.  Just got home and saw the Division II NY State Championship on channel 39.

Our team this year had some players grow some great hockey hair (salads, flow, mullets etc..).  We even saw some great staches.  Here is a video from the Minnesota HS playoffs.  Hockey is a pretty big deal in Minnesota and their state tournament regularly sells out Xcel Energy Center (home of the Minnesota Wild). Well this guy has been putting together All-Hair Team for the last three years.  It is one of the funniest hockey videos, especially if you have ever been out in Minnesota.  The 2013 video is linked below.  Previous years can be googled.

And yes, these are HS players!

CVAC Recognition article in Enterprise

Kane named CVAC player of the year

March 6, 2013
By LOU REUTER - Senior Sports Writer
The Saranac Lake boys hockey team faced adversity all season long, due mainly to a rash of injures that left the Red Storm with a short bench heading into just about every game.
Meanwhile, Lake Placid's hockey team had one of its best campaigns in recent history before its run ended in a double-overtime loss during the Section VII semifinal playoff round.
The two teams, who have one of the most storied rivalries in the North Country high school hockey, combined to have seven team members recognized for their efforts by the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference and Section VII.

Lake Placid had three seniors named to the All-CVAC team. Eddie Kane received the top honor as the league's player of the year and was also a first-team pick at forward. Blue Bombers defenseman RJ Reid was named a second-team all-star and Keegan Barney received honorable mention.
Kane was one of four seniors on a Blue Bombers squad that finished with a 15-5-2 overall record. The four-year varsity player finished second in the CVAC in scoring with 27 goals, 14 assists and 41 points playing in a league where three teams - Lake Placid, Plattsburgh and Beekmantown - all finished the regular season ranked in the top 15 in Division II in New York state.
"Eddie has been a CVAC all-star since his sophomore year, and it's nice to see him get that accolade," Lake Placid coach Keith Clark said. "He was our offensive leader. You have to be able to score goals to win, and Eddie was a guy who has that skill."
Reid was a formidable presence along the blue line for Lake Placid and played a key role defending against the most dangerous players on opposing teams. He finished the season with three goals and 10 assists.
"RJ had a real solid season," Clark said. "He was much more consistent this year than in previous years. He logged a lot of valuable ice time for us, and we often matched him up against other teams' top scorers and top lines."
Barney, a center, was second in scoring for the Blue Bombers with 11 goals and 10 assists.
"We're really going to miss Keegan," Clark said. "He was a fifth-year guy for us. He's a hard worker, he was a consistent force on offense for us, and he's a good guy who did a nice job unifying the team."
