The Blue Bomber Flow

I hope everybody enjoyed the banquet.  Just got home and saw the Division II NY State Championship on channel 39.

Our team this year had some players grow some great hockey hair (salads, flow, mullets etc..).  We even saw some great staches.  Here is a video from the Minnesota HS playoffs.  Hockey is a pretty big deal in Minnesota and their state tournament regularly sells out Xcel Energy Center (home of the Minnesota Wild). Well this guy has been putting together All-Hair Team for the last three years.  It is one of the funniest hockey videos, especially if you have ever been out in Minnesota.  The 2013 video is linked below.  Previous years can be googled.

And yes, these are HS players!

CVAC Recognition article in Enterprise

Kane named CVAC player of the year

March 6, 2013
By LOU REUTER - Senior Sports Writer
The Saranac Lake boys hockey team faced adversity all season long, due mainly to a rash of injures that left the Red Storm with a short bench heading into just about every game.
Meanwhile, Lake Placid's hockey team had one of its best campaigns in recent history before its run ended in a double-overtime loss during the Section VII semifinal playoff round.
The two teams, who have one of the most storied rivalries in the North Country high school hockey, combined to have seven team members recognized for their efforts by the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference and Section VII.

Lake Placid had three seniors named to the All-CVAC team. Eddie Kane received the top honor as the league's player of the year and was also a first-team pick at forward. Blue Bombers defenseman RJ Reid was named a second-team all-star and Keegan Barney received honorable mention.
Kane was one of four seniors on a Blue Bombers squad that finished with a 15-5-2 overall record. The four-year varsity player finished second in the CVAC in scoring with 27 goals, 14 assists and 41 points playing in a league where three teams - Lake Placid, Plattsburgh and Beekmantown - all finished the regular season ranked in the top 15 in Division II in New York state.
"Eddie has been a CVAC all-star since his sophomore year, and it's nice to see him get that accolade," Lake Placid coach Keith Clark said. "He was our offensive leader. You have to be able to score goals to win, and Eddie was a guy who has that skill."
Reid was a formidable presence along the blue line for Lake Placid and played a key role defending against the most dangerous players on opposing teams. He finished the season with three goals and 10 assists.
"RJ had a real solid season," Clark said. "He was much more consistent this year than in previous years. He logged a lot of valuable ice time for us, and we often matched him up against other teams' top scorers and top lines."
Barney, a center, was second in scoring for the Blue Bombers with 11 goals and 10 assists.
"We're really going to miss Keegan," Clark said. "He was a fifth-year guy for us. He's a hard worker, he was a consistent force on offense for us, and he's a good guy who did a nice job unifying the team."

Plattsburgh Game in Enterprise

Hornets stop Bombers in OT

February 23, 2013
By LOU REUTER - Senior Sports Writer
It marked the third time the teams have met this season, with each squad winning once on the road in games decided by a single goal. Friday's rubber-match was expected to be a thriller, and that prediction held true as the contest couldn't have been much closer.
Jack Tolosky was the hero for the Hornets, scoring two goals including the game-winner with 2:19 remaining in the second overtime. Eric Bechard also netted a huge goal for Plattsburgh, scoring with 22 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into sudden-death.

It appeared the Blue Bombers would be on their way to Wednesday's championship game when Nzoni Thompson scored with just 1:22 remaining in the third period to give Lake Placid a late 2-1 edge, but it turned out to be an advantage that didn't hold up.
Plattsburgh and Lake Placid traded goals in the first period during a game that saw both teams put 29 shots on net. The Hornets took a 1-0 lead on Tolosky's first of the game, which came at the 10:05 mark on a shot from a sharp angle that appeared to surprise Lake Placid goalie Tucker Angelopolous. The Blue Bombers pulled even when Shane McNierney buried a puck with 1:58 left in the period to send the teams into overtime deadlocked at 1-1.
After the second period and most of the third stanza went scoreless, Thompson gave third-seeded Lake Placid a 2-1 lead when he picked up a puck along the boards near the Hornets blue line, skated to the net and poked a puck past Plattsburgh goalie Robbie Knowles with 1:28 remaining the regulation.
The Hornets were able to pull Knowles from goal with 1:21 left on the clock for an extra attacker, and got the equalizer when Andrew Bechard top-shelved a wrist shot with 22 seconds left.
Just seconds before Bechard evened things up, the Blue Bombers were inches away from clinching the win with a potential empty-net goal when McNierney sent a puck from his team's zone down the ice. Instead of going in the net, the puck skimmed off the goal post and Lake Placid was called for icing. The Hornets then gained control of the puck on the faceoff in the Blue Bombers zone and tied the game.
Lake Placid outshot the Hornets 5-0 during the first extra session, which went a full 7:30 before heading into a second sudden-death period. The Hornets got the game-winner when John Fine-Lease sent a pass from behind the Lake Placid net to Tolosky, who slid the puck past Angelopolous from in close.
Both head coaches - Lake Placid's Keith Clark and Plattsburgh's Jamie Reidy - said either team could have come up with the win.
"We beat a very sound hockey team that is well coached," Reidy said. "We split during the regular season and we knew how close this game could wind up. It was a close as it could be. We both had 29 shots.
"When they got that huge goal from Thompson, who could be the best skater on their team, we weren't out of it," Reidy added. "In that situation, you don't look at it as being down a goal. Instead, you look at it as being a shot away. We got that shot and made the most of it."
"Our kids played really well," Clark said. "It was two good hockey teams going up and down the ice. It was a great high school hockey game. Both teams played hard and competed hard.
"We were off a little in the second period, but we had a good first period, I think we had the edge in play in the third period and even in overtime," Clark added. "Plattsburgh was fortunate enough to come up with that goal, and it was a nice goal."
The game was the final time seniors Eddie Kane, Keegan Barney, Ryan Meyer and RJ. Reid played in a Lake Placid uniform, and Clark credited all four with providing the leadership that enabled the Blue Bombers to put together a 15-5-2 record this season."
"I personally want to thank our four seniors," Clark said. "I think they took this program and moved in a direction where we were once at. They all had a great year. Yeah, we will miss those guys."
The second-seeded Hornets will now face top-seeded Beekmantown for the Section VII title Wednesday at the SUNY Plattsburgh Field House. The winner of that game will advance directly to the state Division II final four in Utica.

Winter Carnival Update

Having worked through many different scenarios and concerns from the four teams involved below is the schedule for the weekend.  The tournament is no longer and will be replaced with the title "Winter Carnival Hockey Games."

Saturday      Noon             Lake Placid vs. Saranac Lake

Saturday     2:30 PM         Shaker-Colonie vs. Middlebury

Sunday      1:00 PM          Lake Placid vs. Shaker-Colonie

Blue Bombers should report the rink on Saturday at 10:30 AM wearing shirt and tie.  Make sure to have warm-up clothes as well.

Currently most players have their gear in the locker room.  As far as we know it is fine to stay there for the night until the game on Saturday.  If that changes we will call the players.

A letter to Bill Moore - LPYAA President

Dear Mr. Moore,

At 7:30pm on February 20th, the Northwood varsity team will be playing on the 1932 rink against NSA in a special "Pink the Rink" fundraiser for breast cancer. Tommy Evangelista--a player on Northwood--and his parents have donated pink jerseys and socks for the team to wear. The Evangelistas also donated 200 pink t-shirts that we will be selling to the public at the rink for $10 each.

Is there any way that you could advertise this event to the Lake Placid sporting community--specifically the minor hockey program? If so, it would be greatly appreciated.

100% of the raised funds will go to the Jimmy Fund--the fundraising branch of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The DFCI is especially important to Tommy as it helped his grandmother recover from breast cancer. With your help on the advertising front, we could turn this game into a great experience for all and a successful fundraiser for a great cause. I would appreciate your help and look forward to hearing back from you.

Scott Fenwick
Northwood School Student Council President
