Middlebury Tournament in Press

Placid wins tourney despite loss

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — It wasn’t all that bad for the Lake Placid boys’ hockey team Sunday.
The Blue Bombers fell from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 1-0 loss to host Middlebury High School in the Skip Brush Tournament.

Despite the loss, Lake Placid (7-1) won the tournament.
“Each team in the tournament won a game and we ended up winning based on a point system,” said Lake Placid coach Keith Clark.

The Blue Bombers’ first game in the tournament was a 3-0 victory over Brattleboro, Vt. on Friday. Brattleboro then posted a 2-1 win over Middlebury on Saturday.

The only goal in Sunday’s game came at the 11:43 mark of the first period. Keenan Bartlett tallied the game-winning marker, with Sawyer Hescock picking up the assist.
“They got the puck in the neutral zone and caught us in transition,” said Clark. “It was a good goal — for them.”
The Blue Bombers picked up their play in the second and third periods, but were unable to get the equalizer.
“We started out a little slowly, but it was a competitive up-and-down game,” said Clark. “I was pleased with our play in the second and third periods. We had a fair amount of chances, including after pulling our goalie.
“It was a good game.”

Lake Placid finished with a 22-21 advantage in shots on goal. Edgar Sherman was in net for the shutout with 22 saves and Jeffrey Smith turned aside 20 shots for the Blue Bombers.

“They were a physical team and there weren’t a ton of shots,” said Clark.
Out of the Blue Bombers’ eight games thus far, only one has been a Champlain Valley Athletic Conference contest.
Lake Placid will get a better idea where it stands when the Blue Bombers play at Beekmantown on Thursday.

“We have three CVAC games coming up in a row,” said Clark. “The CVAC has already established that it’s going to be a tight league this year.”

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — The unbeaten Blue Bombers (7-0) continued their winning ways with a shutout of Brattleboro, Vt. in the opening round of the Skip Brush Tournament.

Following a scoreless first period, Connor Preston gave Lake Placid with lead at 9:50 of the second, with Ryan Damp and Shane McNierney assisting. Then, at 12:31, Troy Jacques made it 2-0 from McNierney and Lucas Strack.
Eddie Kane closed out the scoring at 11:07 of the third, with Elias Smith picking up the assist.

“We were sluggish at the start,” said Lake Placid coach Keith Clark. “But that could be expected after not practicing.
“We got better the second half of the game and were more consistent with our play. It was a good effort and I was happy with the result.”

Recording the shutout in net for the Blue Bombers was Tucker Angelopoulos, who finished with 14 saves. Greg DeSilva stopped 21 of 24 shots for Brattleboro.

Alumni Game Article from Enterprise

Alumni hockey returns to Lake Placid as fundraiser

December 27, 2012
By LOU REUTER - Senior Sports Writer (lreuter@adirondackdailyenterprise.com) , Adirondack Daily Enterprise
LAKE PLACID - It's been several years since a Lake Placid High School alumni hockey game was held over the holiday break.

That run ended on Wednesday, and most of the credit for making the event a huge success can be given to Ryan "Smiley" Grady, a Blue Bombers senior who has been the manager of the boys hockey team since he was a sixth-grader.
All seniors at Lake Placid High School are required to do a project before they graduate, and Grady turned the alumni game into a fundraiser for 5-year-old Sawyer and 3-year-old Harper, whose father Seth Kilburn tragically passed away this year after he fell while walking home on an August evening in Lake Placid.

Grady said Seth was going to be his godfather when he was baptised a year ago prior to a trip to China, but Seth was unable to be there for the occasion. Seth, who was 34, was a standout hockey player for the Blue Bombers, and Lake Placid's tight-knit hockey community came out in force Wednesday to show its support.

Keith Clark, Lake Placid's boys hockey coach and high school social studies teacher, was Grady's advisor for the project.
"I was looking at getting the alumni game going again, and Smiley was thinking about holding a tournament to help out the Kilburn kids," Clark said.?"As his advisor, I thought the tournament might have been a little too ambitious. We talked about the alumni game, and it turned out to be a perfect fit.

"He's been getting this up and running since late September, and from my perspective, Smiley did a really thorough job," Clark continued. "He did everything. He did a great job with social media, he approached the school board about insurance, he lined up the referees, he arranged for ice time, he worked on getting the players. He's made a lot of connections over the years, and we are extremely proud of the effort he put in on this project."

Wednesday's game at the Olympic Center's 1932 Rink - the home ice of Blue Bombers hockey - was witnessed by a large crowd and featured 40 players competing for the blue and gold teams.
In a contest that included Lake Placid High School gradutes ranging from the class of 1977 to players who graduated in 2012, the blue squad claimed a 3-1 victory.

The event started with Harper, Seth Kilburn's daughter, dropping the puck for the opening faceoff.
Dave Jewtraw scored the first goal for the blue, Trevor Stanton netted the game-winner and Ed Seney, the head men's hockey coach at St. Anselm College and '77 Lake Placid graduate, added an insurance goal.
Joe Leonard notched the gold team's lone goal.

The blue nets were tended by AJ Murphy and Frank Strack was between the pipes for the gold.
Grady said the event has raised more than $2,300 so far, and added he hopes more money will come in to help the two youngters who live in Lake Placid.

"Seth was supposed to be my godfather, and his mom and dad (Celeste and Tony), they mean the world to me," Grady said.?"Helping the kids is something I wanted, something I had to do, and this alumni game was a great way to do it.
"Now that it's over, I'm relieved. It's been a crazy couple of months putting it together," Grady added.?"Down the road, I'm going to look back and say it was a long successful, stressful journey that really changed my life. I've made so many new friends, and their generousity has been tremendous. Hopefully, we can do something just like this next year. I received 100 percent praises."

Donations for the children will be accepted on a on-going basis and can be sent to:
Ryan Grady
34 Liberty Hill Lane
Lake Placid, NY, 12945

All checks should be made payable to: The Sawyer and Harper Kilburn Fund.

Grady is back on the job today and Friday as Lake Placid's team manager, as the unbeaten Blue Bombers attempt to defend their title in Vermont at the annual Skip Brush Memorial Hockey Tournament in Middlebury.

White Plains Win in Press Republican

December 17, 2012

Lake Placid takes down previously-unbeaten White Plains

WHITE PLAINS — After giving up six goals in a 7-6 victory over Mahopac the day before, Lake Placid boys’ hockey coach Keith Clark was looking for a better defensive effort Sunday.
He got just that.
The Blue Bombers limited previously-unbeaten White Plains to 14 shots on goal in a 3-1 non-league victory.
“We’re off to a pretty good start to the season,” Clark said. “It was a team effort today. We did a nice job shutting them down in our own zone and limited the number of scoring chances they had.
“White Plains came into the game unbeaten — they had beaten Suffern. So, it was nice to get two road wins over the weekend. We played really well today.”
Eddie Kane gave the Blue Bombers the lead with 3:09 gone in the first period, with Keegan Barney assisting.
Freshman Noah Mohr then made it 2-0 at 2:14 of the second stanza, with Kane and Troy Jacques picking up assists.
Phil Verino pulled White Plains to within a goal late in the contest at 13:23, but Barney added an empty-net marker with 43 seconds left in regulation to seal it for Lake Placid.
Tucker Angelopoulos turned aside 13 shots in net for the Blue Bombers. Chris Stangerone made 25 saves for White Plains, which was doubled up in shots, 28-14.
The Blue Bombers return to the ice Friday in Glens Falls.
Lake Placid 3, White Plains 1
Lake Placid 1 1 1 — 3
White Plains 0 0 1 — 1

Mahopac Win in Press Republican

LAKE PLACID 7, MAHOPAC 6
BREWSTER — Shane McNierney’s unassisted goal midway through the third period was the difference Saturday as Lake Placid skated to a 7-6 victory over Mahopac in a non-league game.
McNierney’s goal, which came 7:09 into the third, gave the Blue Bombers (4-0, 1-0) a 7-5 lead.
However, Tommy Kurincic pulled the hosts to within a goal with 6:08 left. Kurincic finished with four goals and an assist.
Kurincic tallied two goals in the first period to give Mahopac a 2-0 lead before Lake Placid rallied to take a 3-2 lead after one period with goals by Keegan Barney, Ryan Meyer and Connor Preston.
R.J. Reid and Elias Smith then scored in the second as the Blue Bombers held on to take a 5-4 edge into the third.
Kurincic tied the game with 23 second gone in the final stanza. But Preston tallied his second goal of the contest at 1:46 to put the Blue Bombers back up by one.
McNierney’s goal then gave Lake Placid some needed breathing room.
“It was a wild game, for sure,” Lake Placid coach Keith Clark said. “Offensively, we played well scoring seven goals. But we had a lot of breakdowns in our end and weren’t tough enough in front of our net.
“But we found a way to beat a Division I team. We had to kill off a 5-on-3 skating disadvantage for a minute and a half near the end.”
Jeffrey Smith made 34 saves in net for Lake Placid, which was outshot, 40-26. Tom Gilmore made 19 stops for Mahopac.
Mike DiPasquale and Matt Stefunek also scored goals for the hosts.
The Blue Bombers’ road trip continues with an 11:30 a.m. game today against White Plains.
“They’re unbeaten and it’s going to be a test for us,” Clark said.
