Golf Ball Fundraiser

BLUE BOMBER GOLF BALL FUNDRAISER

The golf balls are in!  Now we need to sell them.  Hopefully players have lined up their golfers to buy  Blue Bomber logo balls.  Each player will be given 2 dozen balls to sell.  If they can sell more that would be great.

COSTS:  Callaway Warbird Plus   $8 a sleeve or $30 a dozen
                Nike 20Xl Tour Level   $11 a sleeve or $40 a dozen

Golf balls will be handed out this week in school.  Money from this fundraiser will support our past trip to Section I and our future trip to Section III.  Thanks for supporting Blue Bomber Hockey.

If you are interested in purchasing please contact a varsity hockey player.

Checks should be made out to LPMHS.

Hockey Specific Workout Option

Players interested in summer workouts can consider the following options.

1. I have a workout in my classroom that the coach from SUNY Oswego used with HS players last summer.  If interested in a copy a player can come and see me.

2. Below is a link to a thorough summer workout program.  This workout is sponsered by Nike and hosted by an NHL player and HNL trainer.  The video streamlines on YouTube as to easily follow this program.  The video also walks you through the different phases of the workout with demonstrations.

This is the link to the hand-out of the program:

These sources can be used by athletes to improve speed, strength and endurance.  They are hockey-specific in nature.  If a player has not worked out in the past it is recommended that they seek out assistance from experts.

Golf Ball Fundraiser

The Boys' Hockey Team will be selling golf balls just in time for golf season.  We will be selling two types: Callaway Warbird and Nike 20Xl.  Each ball will have the Blue Bomber logo on it.  Proceeds will help the team with its team trip from last year and help with next year's trip to Section III.  Once the balls are in I will distribute to players at school.  Spread the word!

Hockey Updates - 2013-2014 Season

Hockey sign-ups for anybody planning on or considering trying out for the hockey team are currently posted outside my classroom.

We are working on a Spring fundraiser where players will sell golf balls with the Blue Bomber logo.  I have discussed this with many of the returning players.  Hopefully we will have this up and running in a couple of weeks.

Next year, our overnight trip (TENTATIVE) will be to Central NY.  We will hopefully be playing on two college campuses (Hamilton and SUNY Oswego) against two section III opponents (Fulton and Clinton).  Hopefully, we will be be able to take in a college game as well.  I am currently working with the coaches involved and the college coaches to see if we can logistically set this up.  If all things work out it will be a 2-night trip and require some additional fundraising.

More information will be forthcoming.

Article on Butch & Hall of Fame

Martin inducted to high school Hall of Fame

March 30, 2013
By LOU REUTER - Senior Sports Writer (lreuter@adirondackdailyenterprise.com,Adirondack Daily Enterprise
LAKE PLACID - Hockey has been an important part of Butch Martin's life for decades.
The Lake Placid native started as a player and skated on the successful Blue Bombers teams of the 1960s. He continued his competitive career in college at the University of New Hampshire, playing for legendary coach Charlie Holt. After Martin's playing days were over, he moved into coaching and officiating, both of which he still does today.
On March 10 in Utica at the New York State Public High School Championships, Martin was honored for his dedication and success in the game he loves. On the day two champions were crowned at the Memorial Auditorium, Martin was named a 2012-13 inductee into the New York State High School Hockey Coaches' Hall of Fame.

At the ceremony, Martin joined Dennis G. Sadler of Rochester's Aquinas Institute as the 34th and 35th coaches to be inducted. In the Hall of Fame, Martin also joined the 1979-80 Lake Placid High School team he coached that captured the first Division I state championship in the inaugural season the tournament was held.
"It's definitely and honor," said Martin, who is the head of the North Elba Park District. "I've been around hockey my whole life as a player, coach and referee. Hockey's been great to me."
Becoming a member of the Hall of Fame can be added to a long list of hockey memories Martin will cherish. One of the those recollections Martin mentioned was the Blue Bombers team he helped lead to the state title in a game played at the Olympic Center less than a month after the United States beat USSR then went on to claim the men's hockey gold medal on the same ice sheet.
That year, Lake Placid finished with a 25-4 record including its 4-1 victory over Ithaca in the state title game.
"Talk about a miracle, it had been about a month since we played a game before the state playoffs," Martin recalled. "We were all off because of the Olympics, and we only had two days to get ready. That was a great year for us."
Martin was the head coach of Lake Placid from 1976-81, and he's been behind the Blue Bombers bench as an assistant to head coach Keith Clark for the past seven seasons. He said one of the most enjoyable things he gets from hockey is still seeing guys he played with, and also watching the kids he coached grow up and continue their involvement in the sport.
"Hockey has always been a big deal in Lake Placid, and I run into guys from the past all the time," Martin said. "Ed Seney, Bill Beaney, we go way back and they are successful college coaches who are still behind the bench today. I see guys I coached still coming to games, I see them in the community, I see them coming back home, and that's great. Hockey certainly is a close community."
Martin became the third person from the area to be inducted into the New York Sate High School Hockey Coaches' Hall of Fame. Longtime coaches Mark Gilligan of Saranac Lake and Lake Placid's Ray Pratt are the other two members who received the honor.
Before the new convention center was built as an addition to the Olympic Center, the actual Hall of Fame was housed in Lake Placid in a corridor bordering the former Lussi Rink. Martin said he will be excited when its physical presence returns so visitors can view some of the history surrounding high school hockey in New York state.

CVAC players combine forces for national hockey tourney

March 29, 2013

LAKE PLACID - Sixteen young, talented hockey players from the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference. That's the makeup of the Plattsburgh Roadrunners, a team that's heading to the 2013 Under-16 Boys National Championships.
The squad, which is led by head coach Keith Clark of Lake Placid and includes players from the Blue Bombers, Saranac Lake, Beekmantown, Plattsburgh and other area high schools, will compete in the U16 national championship tournament April 3-7 in Troy, Mich.
Members on the team from Lake Placid are Tucker Angelopolous, Kiefer Casler, Evan Damp, Connor Preston, Nzoni Thompson and Chris Williams. Chris Spicer will represent Saranac Lake.

Team members are Nathan Foster, Eric Bechard, Ryan Whalen, Chis Spicer, Connor Preston, Kyle Constanty, Jon Fine-Lease, Devin Clark, Kiefer Casler, Noah Gagnier, Tristin Archimbault, Andrew Bechard, Chris Wiliams, Michael Stetz, Tucker Angeloupolos, Ryan Damp and Nzoni Thompson. The team is coached by Dave Champagne, Matt Stetz, Keith Clark and Steve Gagnier.

The Roadrunners qualified to represent the New York District in Michigan after finishing runner-up at the state tournament earlier this month in Amherst, where they posted a 2-2-1 record that included a heartbreaking 5-4 loss in double overtime to Cheektowaga in the championship game.
Plattsburgh's exciting run to the state championship final began with two games on Friday, March 15.
The Roadrunners opened with a fantastic finish in their first game, erasing a two-goal deficit late in the third period to earn a 2-2 tie with Nassau. Trailing 2-0, Michael Stetz netted Plattsburgh's first goal with just under three minutes left in the third to make it a 2-1 score. The Roadrunners were then awarded a penalty shot with four-tenths-of-a-second remaining when a Nassau defender dislodged his team's net under pressure from the Roadrunners. With a chance to tie the game, Beekmantown's Nate Foster buried the penalty shot to give the Roadrunners the tie.
In their next game, the Roadrunners suffered a 3-2 loss to Clarence, the top-seeded squad in the West region. On Saturday, the Roadrunners topped the Long Island Rebels 7-1 to reach Sunday's semifinal round, where they blanked the Long Island 4-0.
In the championship game, the Roadrunners battled back from 3-1 and 4-2 deficits, ultimately tying the contest at 4-4 with their goalie pulled to force overtime. Cheektowaga, however, netted the game-winner in the second overtime period.
"We put this team together to try and supplement the high school schedule and give these players some more quality games," Clark said. "We had plenty of quality players but really never anticipated being so close in the state championships.
"What a great honor to be able to represent the New York District in the national tournament," Clark added. "We will go with the attitude of enjoying the experience and competing hard."

The Blue Bomber Flow

I hope everybody enjoyed the banquet.  Just got home and saw the Division II NY State Championship on channel 39.

Our team this year had some players grow some great hockey hair (salads, flow, mullets etc..).  We even saw some great staches.  Here is a video from the Minnesota HS playoffs.  Hockey is a pretty big deal in Minnesota and their state tournament regularly sells out Xcel Energy Center (home of the Minnesota Wild). Well this guy has been putting together All-Hair Team for the last three years.  It is one of the funniest hockey videos, especially if you have ever been out in Minnesota.  The 2013 video is linked below.  Previous years can be googled.

And yes, these are HS players!

CVAC Recognition article in Enterprise

Kane named CVAC player of the year

March 6, 2013
By LOU REUTER - Senior Sports Writer
The Saranac Lake boys hockey team faced adversity all season long, due mainly to a rash of injures that left the Red Storm with a short bench heading into just about every game.
Meanwhile, Lake Placid's hockey team had one of its best campaigns in recent history before its run ended in a double-overtime loss during the Section VII semifinal playoff round.
The two teams, who have one of the most storied rivalries in the North Country high school hockey, combined to have seven team members recognized for their efforts by the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference and Section VII.

Eddie Kane, Lake Placid
Player of the year, first team
(Enterprise photo — Lou Reuter)
Lake Placid had three seniors named to the All-CVAC team. Eddie Kane received the top honor as the league's player of the year and was also a first-team pick at forward. Blue Bombers defenseman RJ Reid was named a second-team all-star and Keegan Barney received honorable mention.
Kane was one of four seniors on a Blue Bombers squad that finished with a 15-5-2 overall record. The four-year varsity player finished second in the CVAC in scoring with 27 goals, 14 assists and 41 points playing in a league where three teams - Lake Placid, Plattsburgh and Beekmantown - all finished the regular season ranked in the top 15 in Division II in New York state.
"Eddie has been a CVAC all-star since his sophomore year, and it's nice to see him get that accolade," Lake Placid coach Keith Clark said. "He was our offensive leader. You have to be able to score goals to win, and Eddie was a guy who has that skill."
Reid was a formidable presence along the blue line for Lake Placid and played a key role defending against the most dangerous players on opposing teams. He finished the season with three goals and 10 assists.
"RJ had a real solid season," Clark said. "He was much more consistent this year than in previous years. He logged a lot of valuable ice time for us, and we often matched him up against other teams' top scorers and top lines."
Barney, a center, was second in scoring for the Blue Bombers with 11 goals and 10 assists.
"We're really going to miss Keegan," Clark said. "He was a fifth-year guy for us. He's a hard worker, he was a consistent force on offense for us, and he's a good guy who did a nice job unifying the team."
